Brainerd Public Schools Case Study

THE DISTRICT

Spread across 516 square miles, Minnesota’s Brainerd Public Schools serves more than 6,700 students per year. The district is led by a mission of working with the community to ensure all students achieve their individual potential by providing the highest-quality programs and resources to prepare learners for an ever-changing global society. The district’s technology department plays a lead role in achieving this mission.

Sarah Porisch, Director of Technology at Brainerd Public Schools, provided insight into the district’s focus on tech, including how she supports staff

members and families. A former teacher of 15 years, Porisch works proactively to provide innovative tools, ideas and service to all students and

staff in the district. “We’re very passionate about technology in education, and using it to support staff and students,” Porisch said. “I’m really, really proud of our staff, and how far our district has come.”

LEARNING FOR THE FUTURE

At Brainerd Public Schools, 21st century technology and innovation is a priority. The district has committed to increasing the effective and meaningful use of technology in all learning environments, and staying current with rapidly changing systems and products. But, it wasn’t always this way. When Porisch first started working at the district five years ago, it was like the “wild west” of technology, with no common usage or best practices in place. “There was no consistency regarding what or how technology was used in the classroom, so the first thing I did was work with our interim superintendent to get all of our teachers onto laptops,” Porisch explained. “We then examined what devices were available at each school site, and moved towards being one-to-one in grades 5 through 12.”

Brainerd Public Schools partnered with MobileMind to help each educator learn how to leverage G Suite and other education technology tools.

“When I first found out about MobileMind, I was completely sold by the feedback portion,” Porisch said. “I’ve seen many, many companies that provide a laundry list of different training videos, but there’s no feedback afterwards – there’s no way to gauge if you’re really understanding the topic.” Since our professional learning modules are differentiated, teachers are able to work at their own pace, and our human feedback feature ensures that they’re able to celebrate achievements along the way.

A COMMUNITY GOES VIRAL

When COVID-19 first impacted the district in spring 2020, Brainerd Public Schools went fully virtual, and then returned with a hybrid instruction model

this fall. Ensuring staff, students and families have reliable internet access is a crucial component of any distance or hybrid learning plan. Thanks to a close relationship with CTC, a local communications company, and TMobile, Brainerd’s technology department has been able to prioritize getting internet access to those in need. “A lack of connectivity was the biggest barrier for our transition to distance learning,” Porisch explained. “Since we’ve already been setting the framework for using technology for learning, there was an increased comfort level with many families and staff members, which made the rest of the transition easier.”

The district went 1:1 for grades K-12, with every student receiving a device to bring home. Brainerd’s technology department also created a COVID-19 hub with helpful tech resources and advice for families. “Having ‘how-to’s’ for families is huge, and I believe it’s really important to have basics about technology, basics about internet safety and that kind of thing available,” Porisch said. “A personal focus of mine has been creating more easy-to-understand help for families.”

STAFF SUPPORT COMES FIRST

Although Brainerd Public Schools had already embarked on its technology initiative pre-COVID, staff support is still needed. The district has continued to leverage MobileMind’s professional learning resources to help staff members build foundational skills. “We have to remember that many people don’t have the ‘technology vocabulary’, so for them to be tasked with learning that and supporting students can feel stressful,” Porisch said. “I’ve focused on providing that support to our educators through ‘tech tidbits’ that I send via email, and training through MobileMind.” The district has also facilitated ed camps, keynote speakers and other events to help get teachers on board and comfortable with using digital solutions.

PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Brainerd Public Schools is passionate about staff development. To ensure every teacher understands how to leverage the district’s technology investments, Porisch worked with MobileMind to create custom learning pathways. “When people don’t have those foundational skills, it’s challenging for them to fully leverage the digital resources that are available,” Porisch said. “The learning pathways have teachers get hands-on with those foundational concepts, which they can then pass along to peers and students.”

In the past, Porisch had four hours of all-district training per year allotted to technology development. With MobileMind’s learning pathways, staff members can access differentiated lessons, which they work through at their own pace. “I’m really excited about the learning pathways – each one is tailored to teachers’ experience with technology,” Porisch explained. “It’s a two-year program, so next year teachers will be expected to complete a higher level pathway and build upon what they’ve learned so far.”

INNOVATION SPURRED BY A PANDEMIC

For many school districts, the COVID-19 pandemic has offered up an opportunity to rethink how technology can be used to support instruction and learning. Brainerd Public Schools is a shining example of how community support, creativity and innovation can lead to positive change. “Some of my staff members commented that it took an Act of God to get them to use technology, but now that they have, they’re really enjoying it,” Porisch said. “I think there are many other educators out there that are, or have been, in the same boat.”
