Royse City ISD Case Study

THE DISTRICT

Royse City ISD, 30 miles outside of Dallas, is considered a fast-growth district in Texas. In fact, it is part of the top 15 fastest-growing K-12 school districts in the DFW area. The district is adding approximately 1,000 new students every school year to its ten campuses, 1,726 for the 2022 - 2023 school year.

Providing "meaningful and innovative educational experiences that cultivate a passion for learning" for Royse City students aligns perfectly with MobileMind's mission of providing the same experience to educators.

THE CHALLENGE

Like most K-12 districts, Royse City ISD's professional learning initiatives were dispersed between multiple platforms, demanding more time and effort than necessary from Cody Holt, Executive Director of Learning Technology, and Dana Grieb, Director of Professional Learning.

"We never had a system that allowed us to advertise, register people for training, deliver content, and house all of the accomplishments of the teachers before MobileMind. It's that one-stop-shop for us where everything lives."

DANA GRIEB

Director of Professional Learning

With approximately 15% annual student growth rate comes the need for more teachers and staff. Royse City ISD hired 250 new staff members, with around 160 of those being new classroom teachers, for the 2022-2023 school year. While the district offered self-paced, online professional learning through MobileMind, they also wanted to offer in-person training sessions.

THE MOBILEMIND SOLUTION

Royse City ISD got busy creating a learning path for all new teachers. This way new educators would have access to all the essential PD and resources in order to get started in their new district.

"They could access the training when they need it. That's the other thing we really like about MobileMind - that learning is right at our teacher's fingertips," Dana explained.

Royse City is also leveraging MobileMind to create learning paths for their Grow Your Own program in order to prepare paraprofessionals to become classroom teachers.

Dana stated, "We needed a dependable system where we would have all the bells and whistles to create interactive micro-courses and larger learning paths for them." But the strategy didn't stop with virtual PD…

All Royse City educators were required to complete four days of professional learning during the summer. Teachers were given the freedom to choose the courses they wanted to complete and register for them all with MobileMind Events.

How would they manage all of their face-to-face training events? MobileMind Events.

MOBILEMIND EVENTS - A NEW WAY

MobileMind Events is an intuitive scheduling and registration solution for live PD events, such as face-to-face training, webinar events, or even district conferences. Some of the face-to-face training topics for which Royse ISD used MobileMind Events include:

  • Special Education
  • Curriculum Development
  • Reading Academy
  • Gifted and Talented
  • Elementary Science and Math
  • Elementary Social Studies and ELAR Integration
  • Fine Arts
  • Dual Language Support
  • Secondary Science and Math
  • Secondary Social Studies and ELAR
  • Sheltered Instruction
  • STAAR 2.0
  • Capturing Kids’ Hearts

Additionally, the district's professional learning facilitators created online learning paths for some of their face-to-face training sessions. Teachers then got to choose if they wanted to complete the in-person or remote training - giving them a voice and choice in their professional learning journey.

"This summer we used MobileMind for everything face-to-face with Events and traditional MobileMind for self-paced training."

CODY HOLT

Executive Director of Learning Technology

EASE OF USE

When using MobileMind Events for scheduling and registration for in-person training, Royse City's leaders could not say enough about Events' ease of use. As the person responsible for building the events, Dana recalled using MobileMind Events as, "Super intuitive and user friendly, a place for everything I could think of before or after an event."

Cody, Executive Director of Learning Technology, stated "From my perspective, it's the integration with everything. I used to manage 3-4 different things just to get PD sign-ups. Now we have it all in one place."

Royse City is also leveraging MobileMind to create learning paths for their Grow Your Own program in order to prepare paraprofessionals to become classroom teachers.

Dana stated, "We needed a dependable system where we would have all the bells and whistles to create interactive micro-courses and larger learning paths for them."

“The ability to advertise our event appeals to me. This will get us out of the paper signups and certificates business.”

DANA GRIEB

Director of Professional Learning

Cody used a mix of MobileMind virtual learning and MobileMind Events for Instructional Learning Specialists who have been preparing for the Google Certification exam. They have been leveraging Events for in-person study sessions and the virtual PD components of MobileMind as a prerequisite; self-paced micro-courses were required in order to attend the sessions. Every piece of this was scheduled, completed, and tracked in MobileMind, making the process seamless for educators.

Royse City educators and staff were totally new to MobileMind when the district started leveraging Events, but adult learners easily navigated and utilized the full-service PD scheduler with little instruction. Dana commented, “Accessing it [MobileMind] is so easy. The Chrome extension feels like it is a part of our workspace already. It fits in perfectly with how we work.”

As Dana explained, when asked about ease of use, "Early adopters can go in with zero guidance at all. I think that's the great thing about MobileMind. You can just jump in and go!"

When asked about his favorite part of Events, Cody reflected, "It has a really nice calendar view, and it's really straightforward."

WHAT'S NEXT?

Royse City Grow Your Own Program

Since the district rolled out MobileMind in April 2022, they have achieved the following accomplishments, and it continues to grow every day!

  • 637 digital badges earned
  • 1,467 Micro-courses completed
  • 2,254 Hours spent in MM
  • 1,884 PD credit scheduled, earned, and tracked in MobileMind Events

The partnership between Royse City ISD and MobileMind is just beginning. The district has big plans for the learning hub in the 2022 - 2023 school year, including their version of the Texas Education Agency's Grow Your Own initiative, which has the goal of developing, "high quality courses for college credit that will be completed by paraprofessionals working in an accelerated bachelor’s degree and alternative certification program that is paid for by the district.”

In addition to the amazing PD work Royse is already doing through MobileMind, their paraprofessionals will now use MobileMind to complete learning paths to earn college credit, accelerating their learning and, ultimately, careers.

The MobileMind educator team will continue to work closely with Royse City leaders to ensure they are reaching their goals for high quality professional learning throughout the district; The MobileMind team is excited to see what the future holds as we continue to transform PD for Royse educators and staff.
